Notes: As his release from full-time service approached, the following testimonial was written for him (dated 14 May 1948): “Has spent 8 months out of his 18 months’ service in the Middle East as a wireless Operator on the C in C’s launch. He is keen to return to his pre-service trade & should do well. He has a general interest in radio. Has played cricket & rugger for his troop.” (This ties up with his own description of his service as being ‘the only soldier on a navy boat.’) In 1948 he transferred to the Territorial Army (this was normal for somebody leaving full-time Service) and he was finally discharged from the T.A. in 1954. |
